“Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.”
The Lord was preparing his disciples to grow deeper in their trust as they set out to spread the Good News of the gospel. The apostles where not teaching on their own authority. Throughout all their preaching and teaching there was always the authority of Jesus Christ. I believe our Lord knew there would be controversy and rejection. And yet, He calls us to the same mission today to love God with all our heart, mind, and soul.
My friends, those who seek happiness in life by pursing only their own interests will never be fulfilled. How often have we tried to solve a problem or get through a struggle on our own? It never works. Jesus is not asking us to abandon our mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters. He is not in competition for our love, He wants us to love our family through Him, with Him and in Him.
When we put the love of God first in our lives everything else falls into place. The key is accepting all the graces God bestows upon us. Yes, every those graces that feel more like a punishment. God knows what is best for us, always.
Let us take some time today to allow the Lord to shine light on whatever attachment, habit, or plan that exists in our life that competes with our love for Christ. Let’s take time to allow Christ to be in the center of the all our decisions, not just this week, but always. And not just the big decisions but the little ones as well.
May the God of all understanding and compassion empower us to follow the right path in doing His will. May we learn to become worthy and true disciples always acknowledging His glory and then in peace, live in His everlasting joy. ~Amen
