Sunday Wisdom: Reaching Out to Others

Today’s gospel is a parable that emphasizes the connection between seeing a need and acting on it. The kingdom of heaven shows up where we least expect it.

This parable is not about what is going to happen in the future, but about opening our eyes to see the presence of Jesus. It is about us seeing the needs of others and responding. If I turn away from my brothers and sisters in need, I am turning away from Jesus.

Let’s turn to Mother Teresa for her insights on helping others. “Let us touch the dying, the poor, the lonely and the unwanted according to the graces we have received and let us not be ashamed or slow to do the humble work. We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty.

Lord, help us all to recognize those around us who are in need and to respond with love, compassion and mercy.
